| We are sisters! Originally from the Northwest, we now live on separate coasts. Training and running together whenever we get the chance. Through Girls on Speed, we honor our grandmother along the way. Grandma Marge suffered from Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for over 20 years, we are dedicated to raising money and awareness for a small charity that is making big steps in promoting MS active living. As a direct result from us raising money independently, all donations go straigt to the chairty, Can Do MS. |
Who we are:
Darcy
Darcy joined the NYC running scene a little more then three years ago, and runs for a local club called the New York Harriers. NYC 2012 would have been her fifth marathon, and second time running New York. Instead she ran the Philladelphia marathon (for her second time), just two weeks after New York's Marathon. Next up . . Boston!!!! Check out the BAA training schedule to be a part of this season's training, and awesome new activities!
Misty
A long time cross-country runner; the NYC Marathon was Misty's first time training for 26.2 miles. A full time mother, Misty has two of the cutest boys ever, the youngest of which was only six months when she started training! Living in Gig Harbor, Washington, she is priveledged to some great trails and hills. Although Misty did not end up running a marathon, she had a killer training season, and is looking forward to Portland Marathon this fall. Stay tuned!!
The Cause:
So where is all this money going??? A great organization based in Colorado that gives people with MS the tools to lead active lives! Founder Jimmie Heuga was diagnosed with MS in his 20s, shortly after winning a medal in downhill skiing in the 1964 Olympics. His sports career ended, and doctors told him his best treatment was to stay sedentary. Instead, he founded the predecessor to Can Do, and spent the next several decades developing an organization what now stages free seminars across the country for people with MS. Can Do promotes exercise, nutrition, stress management, goal setting and communication with family and other caregivers. It gets high marks from charity watchdogs -- over 80 percent of its expenses are directly on the program, and the CEO has a low salary. Although scientific research charities are obviously important, we love Can Do because its work improves the lives of MS patients today. So please help us honor the legacy of our grandma (and of Jimmie Huega, who died in 2010) by making a donation.
